According to the 2014 National Business Group on Health/Towers Watson, Inc. Employer Survey on Purchasing Value in Healthcare, the following tactics will be adopted by “best performers” in 2015:

1.     Differentiate cost sharing for high-performance networks (35%)

2.     Offer telemedicine (29%)

3.     Reward or penalize based on biometric outcomes other than smoker/tobacco-use status (23%)

4.     Offer a full replacement CDHP (24%)

5.     Use value-based design in pharmacy benefits (21%)

6.     Use value-based design in medical benefits (21%)

7.     Develop a specialty pharmacy cost management strategy (19%)

8.     Adopt new payment methodologies to reward quality (19%)

9.     Incorporate HSA communication in retirement planning vehicles (18%)

10.  Structure employee contributions based on employees taking specifi­c steps (18%)

“Best Performers” are companies that have maintained cost increases at or below the Towers Watson/NBGH median for each of the past four years. With an average of 1.6% increase from 2010 to 2013, these companies are good examples to follow in managing health care costs.
