Modern-day loyalty really took flight when American Airlines launched the AAdvantage frequent flyer program in 1981, ushering in a whole fleet of travel loyalty efforts by airlines, hotels and rental car companies over the next few years. Within a week of the launch of AAdvantage, United Airlines followed suit and announced the creation of its Mileage Plus program, and all remaining U.S. carriers quickly jumped into the fray. Hotels were next to see the importance of loyalty programs: Holiday Inn launched its Priority Club in January 1983, followed by Marriott with its Honored Guest program in November of that year and Hilton with HHonors in 1987. Rental car companies came aboard with the National Rental Card in 1987, and Hertz pioneered a new strategy when it became the first to join an airline frequent flyer program, partnering with AAdvantage.
