President Barack Obama, once again plugging his government-mandated health care plan, said on Saturday he will reward the city that records the most sign-ups during this open enrollment period.
At the end of the open enrollment period, HHS says it will post the number of new Obamacare signups in the following selected cities: Dallas, Texas; Tampa, Fla.; Atlanta, Seattle, Great Falls, Mont.; Salt Lake City, Kansas City, Mo.; Chicago, Phoenix, Detroit, Charlotte, New Orleans, Denver, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Las Vegas, Oakland, Calif.; Richmond, Va.; and Long Beach, Calif.
“The victorious community gets bragging rights, a healthier community, and a visit from President Obama to celebrate their success in helping ensure every American has health coverage,” HHS said.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2014, 10.4 percent of people (or 33.0 million) were uninsured for the entire calendar year. This was a decrease of 2.9 percentage points from 2013, when 13.3 percent (or 41.8 million) were uninsured for the entire calendar year.
Last month, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell announced that she expects 10 million individuals to be enrolled in coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplaces and paying their premiums (so-called effectuated coverage) – at the close of 2016.
